Invited by Professor Chun-Feng Liu, Professor Wenbin Deng (University of California, Davis) gave a brilliant talk entitiled “Stem Cells for Glial Regeneration and Neural Repair” in Institute of Neuroscience at 2:30pm, March 27th, 2014. The faculties and students from Institute of Neuroscience and School of Medicine attended and gave Prof. Deng a warm welcome.

As a tenured associate professor of UC Davis, Prof. Deng has two main research interests: 1) Stem cell biology and regenerative medicine research; 2 ) Pathogenesis of central nervous system diseases and injuries. Prof. Deng’s group focused on the basic and translational medical research of stem cell and regeneration biology and carried out a series of innovative work in the fields of glial cell development and function, including the intracellular signalling mechanisms in glial cells and the contribution of glial cells in the regulation of neuronal plasticity and diseases. Prof. Deng firstly introduced the application of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS) in disease models and then explained how his group set up the excellent stem cell platform, which could be applied into the research systems from gene, protein to human disease. Finally, he emphasized a example that glial cell and oligodendroglia cell successfully used in transplantation therapy to repair nerve injury. After the lecture, Prof. Deng had a deep, beneficial and inspiring communication with the faculties and students.
